PS5 NAT Type 1 vs NAT Type 2: Why Type 2 is Ideal & DMZ Reality

Many gamers believe they must achieve NAT Type 1 on PlayStation 5 for low latency. In reality, NAT Type 1 only exists when a console connects directly to a modem without any router or firewall protection.

The Truth: NAT Type 2 is the ideal and intended state for any PlayStation console behind a router. It means your router is successfully forwarding peer-to-peer voice and gaming packets. Only NAT Type 3 (Strict) requires fixing. Never put your PS5 in DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) permanently, as it exposes the console to raw internet scans.

PlayStation NAT Type Definitions

  • NAT Type 1 (Open): Connected directly to internet modem with public IP. No router firewall.
  • NAT Type 2 (Moderate/Open behind Router): Connected through a home router with UPnP or port forwarding active. All party chat and matchmaking work flawlessly.
  • NAT Type 3 (Strict): Firewall blocking peer-to-peer UDP communication. Cannot host lobbies or join voice parties with certain friends.

Essential Ports for PlayStation Network (PSN)

If UPnP fails and your PS5 is stuck on NAT Type 3, forward these ports in your router's admin panel:

TCP: 80, 443, 3478, 3479, 3480
UDP: 3478, 3479, 49152~65535
🛡️ Router Portal Verification & Safety Standard

Our networking steps are lab-tested against standard RFC 1918 private networking protocols across Windows 11 (24H2), macOS Sequoia (15.1), iOS 18, and Android 15. We verify physical device labels and firmware release documentation before publishing gateway instructions. Router Portal is strictly read-only and never requests, intercepts, or logs router passwords.
