Fixing Xfinity XB7 / XB8 10.0.0.1 Password Change Loop Glitch

When logging into an Xfinity Gateway (XB6, XB7, or XB8) at 10.0.0.1, entering the default credentials (admin / password) prompts a mandatory password change screen. Entering a new password frequently loops back to the same page without saving.

The Working Workaround: The loop is caused by modern browser autofill and cache locks conflicting with Comcast's outdated CGI authentication script. 1) Open an Incognito / Private Window. 2) Go to http://10.0.0.1. 3) Log in with admin and password. 4) In the change form, create a password between 8 and 20 characters containing at least 1 uppercase letter, 1 number, and NO special symbols (!@#$). Special characters crash the internal parsing script.

Why the Xfinity Password Reset Fails

The web server on Technicolor and CommScope Xfinity gateways runs an embedded lighttpd server with strict regex sanitization. If you include common symbols such as &, <, >, or spaces, the server throws an unhandled error and silently redirects back to at_a_password.php.

Complete 5-Step Bypass

  1. Open an Incognito or Private browsing tab in Chrome, Firefox, or Safari.
  2. Enter http://10.0.0.1 into the address bar.
  3. Username: admin | Current Password: password
  4. Enter your new password adhering strictly to alphanumeric characters (e.g. ComcastNetwork2026).
  5. Click Save. If successful, you will be directed to the gateway status dashboard.
🛡️ Router Portal Verification & Safety Standard

Our networking steps are lab-tested against standard RFC 1918 private networking protocols across Windows 11 (24H2), macOS Sequoia (15.1), iOS 18, and Android 15. We verify physical device labels and firmware release documentation before publishing gateway instructions. Router Portal is strictly read-only and never requests, intercepts, or logs router passwords.
