Ping, latency, and packet-loss test

Compare your local gateway with a public destination and interpret results cautiously.

Safety boundary: Use these instructions only for a router or network you own or are authorised to manage. Never enter a router password, Wi-Fi password, SSID, serial number or private network data into Router Portal.

Connectivity check

The measurement method and probe location must be shown. A browser cannot promise arbitrary ICMP.

Metrics

MetricMeaning
ReachabilityA response arrived
RTT/latencyRound-trip response time
Packet lossSent packets without response
JitterVariation in response time

Two-stage test

  1. Test the Default Gateway for local Wi-Fi/Ethernet evidence.
  2. Test a public destination for ISP/path evidence.
  3. Repeat and compare wired/wireless when possible.

Interpretation and privacy

One slow intermediate response is not automatic proof of a fault; filtering and deprioritisation are common. Safe deployment needs controlled probes, rate limits, timeouts and minimal logs.

Frequently asked questions

Is browser ping the same as ICMP?

No. HTTP, WebRTC, server and ICMP paths differ and must be labelled honestly.

What is good latency?

It depends on distance, use case and route; avoid one universal threshold.

Should packet loss trigger a reset?

No. Check the local link, gateway, Wi-Fi, service and ISP evidence first.
