Saved Wi-Fi recovery

How to find a saved Wi-Fi password

Try the device that already knows the network before changing the router or resetting anything.

Safety boundary: Use these instructions only for a router or network you own or are authorised to manage. Never enter a router password, Wi-Fi password, SSID, serial number or private network data into Router Portal.
Quick answer: If your own device has the network saved, use its current Wi-Fi details, share or QR option. Menus vary by OS version and manufacturer.

First identify the password

A saved Wi-Fi key joins the network. A router admin password opens the control panel. They may be different; use admin-password recovery for the second case.

Windows

Open the saved network properties and use the security-key view when your Windows version offers it. Administrator approval may be required.

macOS

Open saved network details or Keychain Access, select the network and authenticate when macOS asks.

Android

Open connected Wi-Fi details and use Share or QR when available. Manufacturer menus differ; do not upload the QR.

iPhone and iPad

On supported versions, open saved network details and authenticate to reveal or share. Otherwise use built-in sharing or ask the owner.

If unavailable

Check the label, ask the owner, or use router settings after finding the gateway. Do not crack passwords or reset unnecessarily.

Is a QR code safe to share?

It is a bearer credential; anyone with the image may join.
